  California Notice 97-3
  POST UNTIL September 19, 1997

NOTICE OF INITIATION OF REEVALUATION
OF PESTICIDE PRODUCTS

The Director of the Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR), pursuant to Articles 8 and 12 (Title 3) of the California Code of Regulations, notices DPR's decision to initiate a reevaluation of pesticide products. Interested persons may comment on this decision up to and including the date shown on the top-right corner of this notice to the Department of Pesticide Regulation, Pesticide Registration Branch, 1020 N Street, Room 332, Sacramento, California 95814.

REEVALUATION

DPR commences reevaluation of the following pesticide products without further notice. The products included in this reevaluation
are fungicides that contain the active ingredient maneb.

Registrant Brand Name U.S. EPA Reg. No.
Elf Atochem North America, Inc. Maneb 80 4581-255-AA
Maneb 75 DF Dry Flowable Fungicide 4581-371-AA
  Maneb 80 WP 4581-255-ZA
Griffin Corporation Manex 1812-251-AA

BASIS OF REEVALUATION

Data on file with DPR and literature in the public domain indicate that products containing maneb have the potential to be human skin sensitizers. None of the products listed above bear a warning on their labels informing users of the potential skin sensitization hazard.

Notice of Reevaluation
Page Two

Skin sensitization (allergic contact dermatitis) is an immunological reaction of skin to a substance. In humans, such reactions include severe itching, redness, swelling, inflamed spots, blisters, or a combination of these symptoms. In the assessment and evaluation of the toxic characteristics of a pesticide product, determination of the products potential to cause skin sensitization identifies potential hazards to humans repeatedly exposed to the pesticide.
