Backflow Prevention and Chemigation Safety Information
Back to Groundwater Protection Regulations
Chemigation is the application of pesticides through an irrigation system. This method of application requires special backflow prevention devices to keep pesticides from contaminating source waters, such as groundwater.
The DPR Environmental Monitoring Branch developed and implemented a chemigation safety training program for growers, pest control advisers, and pesticide applicators. The educational materials used in this training program include regulatory requirements, DPR policies, and descriptions of chemigation system safety devices and their approved alternative devices.
DPR uses information gathered from our stakeholders to determine whether regulatory or policy changes, such as adding new chemigation safety device options, are needed in California to further protect groundwater from contamination.
