Potential Pesticide Contaminants - Regulations

Back to Groundwater Protection Regulations
Back to Identifying Potential Pesticide Contaminants

As mandated in the Pesticide Contamination Prevention Act (PCPA), DPR adopted the following regulations to enable the identification of agricultural pesticides that have the potential to pollute groundwater.

Specific Numerical Values

Mobility and persistence thresholds established in regulation are used as the first step in the identification of potential pesticide contaminants.

Groundwater Protection List

The groundwater protection list consists of agricultural pesticides that exceed Specific Numerical Values for mobility and persistence and are intended to be applied to or injected into the soil by ground-based application equipment or by chemigation, or the label of the pesticide requires or recommends that the application be followed, within 72 hours, by flood or furrow irrigation.

Potential Revision to Regulations

In accordance with Food and Agricultural Code section 13145(e), a three-member subcommittee consisting of one member each representing DPR, the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA), and the State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB), shall be consulted for a revision to the existing method to determine the potential of a pesticide to pollute groundwater. The public meeting is October 28, 2024. See below for more information, such as agenda and scientific support of revision.
